Notes:

Iosif Mikhailovich Gurvich was a Soviet painter and graphic artist known for his expressive works that blended realism with emotional depth. He trained at the prestigious Vkhutemas (Higher Art and Technical Studios), which was a hotbed for avant-garde art during the early Soviet period. His artistic career spanned several tumultuous decades in Soviet history, including Stalinist repression, World War II, and the Khrushchev Thaw.

Gurvich’s style evolved over time, reflecting both personal introspection and the constraints of Soviet cultural policy. While he adhered to the principles of Socialist Realism — the official art style of the USSR — his works often revealed a nuanced sensitivity, focusing on the human condition rather than grandiose political themes.

Today, Gurvich is appreciated as a representative of a generation of Soviet artists who managed to convey personal truth and artistic integrity within the confines of an ideologically rigid system
