GURU HAR RAI, THE SEVENTH SIKH GURU, AND HIS ATTENDANT

Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the vertical composition a 20th-century close copy of a well-known painting depicting the Seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai (1630 - 1661), standing in a green landscape next to a flowering tree, accompanied by a dog and a faithful attendant holding a large parasol above the Guru's head, set within white rules and dark blue borders, pasted on wasli paper, 22.5cm x 16.5cm.
Bonhams London sold two paintings almost identical to our lot. For reference, please see 4 December 2019, lot 157, and 13 August 2020, lot 174. All these paintings are 20th-century close copies of a standing portrait of Guru Har Rai dating to 1815 and attributed to the Guler school, currently part of the Government Museum and Art Gallery's collection in Chandigarh, and illustrated in S. Stronge (ed.), The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms, 1999, p. 35, no. 30.
