'I have always derived a particular satisfaction from still life painting, whether in looking at the work of the great masters of still life, particularly Cezanne and the Cubists or, if I may mention it in the same context, in my own work from student studies to my present pictures. Still life is also very convenient to those of us who have to earn our living by means other than painting. Once set up it is there, ready and waiting and easily controlled... I am also very interested in colour and I find that I can experiment with it far more readily in still life than in landscape or other subjects. Furthermore, I enjoy the objects themselves, and work amongst a clutter of them. I enjoy composing on the picture-surface itself, treating still life themes as table top architecture. In fact, as the masters show us, one can take every kind of liberty with still life - providing that you know what you're doing.' (Bernard Myers, 'Still Life in Pastel', in The Artist, May 1988, p. 14)
