A POLYCHROME-PAINTED CHEMLA POTTERY WATER JUG

Of typical amphora-like shape, resting on a flat circular base, rising to flared, broad and curved shoulders and to a tall tapering neck with reinforced circular rim, on the sides two curved handles, painted in blue, yellow and green with manganese black outlines, the decoration consisting of green arches framing floral and vegetal triumphs reminiscent of Iznik pottery designs, a band of alternating polychrome vertical stripes to the neck, marked with a flower and signed 'Awlad Shemlah, Tunis' in free-flowing Arabic script, the unglazed base with a faded pencil inscription possibly reading 'Leboueg', 61cm diam. and 29cm high.
