*** First edition of this very rare album that shows the costume worn in various Polish regions during the Romantic period. The illustrations depict mountain dwellers from Kolomya surroundings, peasants from Wilno surroundings, beggars from Kijow surroundings, peasant women from Jaroslaw surroundings, etc. Compiled by the Polish political activist and literary critic Zienkowicz (1808-70), who fled to France during the Great Emigration, the work covers the history of Polish peoples and regional culture, also including sections on Ukraine and Lithuania.
