λ A PAIR OF MOTHER-OF-PEARL AND BONE-INLAID ORIENTALIST MASHRABIYA-STYLE ARMCHAIRS
Egypt, mid to late 20th century

Comprising two almost identical Orientalist armchairs, each of slightly elongated rectangular shape, resting on four globular feet, the legs worked in the shape of ogival arches with a cusped centre and a black-and-white frieze as frame, each backrest surmounted by cusped arches imitating architectural models of Middle Eastern buildings, the back, side and front leg panels all worked in the same openwork mashrabiya-style with rows of balustrade-like clusters arranged in a repeating grid, the back and armrests enhanced with mother-of-pearl and bone marquetry work featuring typical Islamic patterns like geometric star designs, chequered grids, intertwined knotwork and fretwork bands, the wooden arches at the top further carved with split palmettes and foliage, the cushioned backrests and sea lined in white fabric decorated with vegetal triumphs, each H 128cm x W 67cm x D 71cm.
