Notes:

Leo Marchutz was a German-born painter, lithographer, and draughtsman who spent most of his life in Aix-en-Provence. Largely self-taught, he drew early from masters like Cézanne and Van Gogh, developing a contemplative, minimalist style rooted in light and form. Marchutz worked closely with major figures in Cézanne scholarship, including John Rewald and Fritz Novotny, and collaborated with artists such as André Masson and Tal Coat, producing lithographic editions of their work. He also illustrated texts by writer Pierre-Jean Jouve and was supported by architect Fernand Pouillon. Marchutz’s works are held in prominent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Louvre, and the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence. His legacy continues through ongoing cataloguing efforts and educational programs dedicated to his life and art.
