TWO SEATED PORTRAITS OF MAHARAJAS OF MARWAR (JODHPUR)

Opaque pigments heightened with silver and gold on paper, comprising two vertical compositions depicting two seated portraits of Rajput rulers ruling over the Marwar Kingdom, Vijay Singh Rathore (1729 - 1793) and his heir apparent, Man Singh, the last independent Maharaja of Marwar Kingdom and Jodhpur State (r. 19 October 1803 – 4 September 1843), the first seated on a palatial terrace on a golden throne under a canopy and above a floral summer floor spread, resting against a large light pink bolster, wearing several strands of pearls and a pearl and emerald-encrusted sarpech (turban ornament), his attendants behind him whisking a peacock feather fan and a holding his dhal (shield) and tulwar (sword), the recto with a line of black ink Devanagari script at the top of the page naming the Maharaja, 31cm x 21.5cm; and the latter seated under a canopy on a silver throne, with a large and voluminous turban, receiving a member of the court, backed in wasli paper, 29.5cm x 22cm.
