MISSIONARY ALBUM, UGANDA & RWANDA, 1880s-1890s
Album with silver gelatin prints (94) mounte to card, mostly two per page, recto and verso, image size approx. 180 x 120mm (or the reverse), with manuscript captions in ink, some titled in the negative. Housed in an oblong folio measuring 245 x 330mm, rebound in modern red cloth boards.
An interesting album chronicling the missionary activity in Uganad and Rwanda, particularly that of Antonin Guillermain (1861-1896), a Catholic missionary who served as Vicar Apostolic of Northern Nyanza (now Uganda) from January 1895 until his death in July 1896, wih portraits of Guillermain on his voyage, in discussion with local tribal chiefs, as well portraits of local tribes, groups of orphans, women, and and children, mission structures and church construction, local musicians, and one portrait of young boys standing with elephant tusks.
