stating in part "Whereas We have thought it necessary for the encouragement of Our Subjects trading to Calais and the Ports and Places in the Departments of the North, the Straits of Calais and the Somme, belonging to Our Good Brother The Most Christian King, to appoint a consul to reside at Calais to take care of their affairs, and to aid and assist them in all their lawful and mercantile concerns, and endeavour to procure them that Justice and Equity which shall be agreeable to the Friendship and Good correspondence established between Us and Our said Good Brother" and appointing Samuel Gregory Marshall to be His Majesty’s Consul at Calais, signed ('George R') at the head, countersigned at the foot by Lord Castlereagh (1769-1822) Anglo-Irish politician and statesman, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1812-22 and central to the management of the coalition which defeated Napoleon Bonaparte, one page (vellum), with blind embossed paper seal affixed, some light overall creasing and a few minor stains, ), large oblong folio, Court at Brighton, 1 January 1822.
