A George III provincial sterling silver mounted terrapin or star tortoise shell snuff box, Newcastle circa 1810 by Dorothy Langlands (active 1804-14)
The hinged lid inset with the animal’s underbelly, within a beaded edge. Marked to interior only with maker’s mark, lion passant and duty mark only.
Length – 7.3 cm / 2.8 inches
Within the list of items sent for assay by Dorothy Langlands between 11th May 1804 – 23rd Dec 1814 , it lists “mounting for a box, mounting for a horn, mounting for a shell, mounting for a snuff box” which would presumably refer to objects such as this, Margaret Gill, Directory of Newcastle Goldsmiths (1980), p. 138.
