TWO OUTDOOR SCENES WITH ASCETICS
Bundi and Jaipur, North-Western India, late 19th - early 20th century
Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, comprising two vertical compositions depicting outdoor scenes with ascetics or holy men being visited by members of the royal court, and entertained by a sitar player whilst in tranquil contemplation, the first painting set within yellow and white rules, and silver, cobalt blue and bright red borders, backed in wasli paper, 24cm x 17cm; and the latter with an ascetic seated on a tiger skin, a peacock fan next to him, at the top of the painting three lines of black ink Devanagari script against ochre ground, set within black rules, and ochre and burgundy borders, backed in wasli paper, 28cm x 22cm.
