Iran, 19th century

The uncut shawl cloth twill-tapestry woven in multiple bands of polychrome wools on a saffron ground, with repeating rows of butis stemming from foliate bases, the ground in-filled with delicate floral repeats, the narrow border with a stylised floral frieze, the end chain-stitched in white silk with a marquise-shaped cartouche bordered by small stars, containing the Persian words ‘commissioned, new design, newly appeared, excellent, excellent’, and the word ‘Ahfeez’, possibly a workshop title, 219cm x 100cm.
