Davis (Bette)

Davis (Bette)

Autograph letter signed ('Bette') to Mae Clark, saying "I wish I knew what film H.G. was talking about. Never heard of such a thing- if ever there were something for you would have my vote!! Sorry this was a false report as far as I'm concerned - maybe H.G. would have some ne8vo, was about it all. Isn't she still playing here in 'Oh Dad etc'?", two pages, folding marks, 8vo, n.p., 17 June 1963; with Ringgold (Gene) The Films of Bette Davis, signed and inscribed on front free endpaper "Happy Valentine's Day, Dear Mae Clarke - and please forgive my publisher for allowing his proof-reader to misspell your name. I promise to have it corrected should we go into a second printing" (the spelling mistake is on page 17), pictorial dust-jacket, large 4to, New York, Bonanza Books, 1946

***Mae Clarke was an American actress, widely remembered for playing Henry Frankenstein's bride Elizabeth, who is chased by Boris Karloff in Frankenstein, and for being on the receiving end of James Cagney's halved grapefruit in The Public Enemy. Bette Davis and Mae Clarke probably met on the set of the 1931 movie Waterloo Bridge.

Estimated at £250 - £350
