After graduating from the School of Arts and Crafts in 1935, Stone worked as an assistant to some of the leading designers of the time: Motley, Michael Ayrton, Rex Whistler, John Piper, Tanya Moiseiwitsch and Leslie Hurry. She produced her designs for major British opera companies including Sadler's Wells, English National Opera and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
