TWO MICA PAINTINGS WITH RULERS ON HORSEBACK
Patna or Murshidabad, India, ca. 1820 - 1840

Opaque pigments on mica, comprising two leaves in horizontal format, each of different size and acting as an accurate photograph of 19th-century Indian society, fashion, and cultural traditions, the smallest panel featuring a finely dressed prince or nobleman riding his chestnut steed embellished with strings of pearls around its neck and parade reins, behind the rider a white-clad servant holding a fly-whisk, 10.5cm x 15cm; and the largest panel featuring a crowded ceremonial procession scene with flag bearers on an elephant's back and musicians in the front, and a yellow-clad ruler on a chestnut steed at the back, 15.5cm x 19.8cm.
