TWO COMPANY SCHOOL PAINTINGS OF TRADITIONAL INDIAN MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION

Possibly Murshidabad and Patna, North-Eastern India, ca. 1830 - 1850

Opaque pigments and white wash on wove and laid paper, comprising two vertical compositions portraying different forms of traditional means of transportation in India, the first depicting a green and red two-wheel cart led by two white bulls, the rider clad in white and wearing a typical white hat (taqiyah) in use in the Muslim and Sufi communities of India, mounted, glazed and framed, the folio 19.5cm x 14.5cm, 45.5cm x 38.5cm including the frame; the latter with a Southern Indian prince or nobleman seated on a litter carried by four footmen, a fifth servant holding a large parasol over the nobleman's head to create shade, mounted, glazed and framed, the folio 22.5cm x 19cm, 45cm x 38cm including the frame.
