A MARINID-REVIVAL BLACK CALLIGRAPHIC POTTERY FRIEZE
Possibly Morocco, 18th - 19th century

Comprising twenty-two square architectural pottery tiles and two end-tiles, aligned to create a long rectangular epigraphic frieze quoting a poetic ruba'i in Arabic about praying and enjoying the beauties of nature, each tile decorated with a purplish-black glaze and carved after firing setting the calligraphy in relief against scrolling vegetal tendrils and foliage, a thick border framing the composition, 20cm x 121cm.
