A Continental oak coffer, believed first half of the 17th century
Viewing exclusively at Roslin Square by appointment only on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

possibly Low Countries, the stipple ground front carved with central panel of sunflowers within a vase flanked by twin monstrance type devices, and twin birds within knotwork and flowerhead borders, the block base carved with central winged mask flanked by twin flowerheads and birds, the base sides with lozenge motifs, the (later) hinged cover opening to reveal an interior with space for (now missing) candle box.

Dimensions: 73cm high, 143cm wide, 54cm deep

Notes:

An interesting piece of (likely) 17th century oak furniture for which there doesn't appear to be an immediate comparison. Construction and certain features point to Low Country origin, though use of monstrance type devices suggest ecclesiastical (possibly Catholic) connections.
