Berruyer (Rosalie)

Berruyer (Rosalie)

Album containing an original manuscript for ‘Mémoires d'une bonapartiste ou le souvenirs de mes voyages en Angleterre’ (published posthumously in 1894), ‘fait a mon domicile Rue de la Reine no. 10, Lyon’, also including two mounted albumen prints presumably depicting Berruyer and a loosely-inserted letter, 59pp., on ruled paper, half morocco, gilt lettered, paint marks, aeg, folio, dated 1890.

***Rosalie Berruyer was a poor cook who saved her money in order to journey to England in the 1870s and visit the imperial family in Chislehurst. The purpose of her narrative was to continue what she called ‘le culte bonapartiste’ [the cult of Bonaparte], and the work is dedicated to Empress Eugénie and Napoleon III.
