AN IZNIK POTTERY JUG
PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF LORD KENYON, SIXTH BARON OF GREDINGTON
Ottoman Turkey, ca. 1580 - 1600
Of bulbous pyriform shape, resting on a short straight circular foot, with a curved handle stemming from the narrow shoulders and joining at the widening rim, painted in cobalt blue, bole red, green and turquoise with black outlines, all against a milky white ground, the exterior decorated with gently bending hyacinths and tulip stems, the pattern a classic example of Iznik pottery design, with two further bands of chevrons and spirals around the neck framing a frieze of tulips and blue rosettes, 27cm high.
