This subject, copied from Raphael's similarly-sized composition (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) was apparently given by the artist to his friend, Dr. John Ogle, in 1882. This information was incised upon a wooden box that once contained this picture (a presentation method which Richmond used on several occasions, with one example recently with John Robertson Fine Art), now lost, but recorded upon a modern handwritten label to the reverse. Presumably Richmond had access to the original when it was in the esteemed picture collection of `the richest heiress in England`, Angela Georgina Burdett, later Baroness BurdettCoutts (1817-1906). Richmond also painted his own version of this subject, with that painting now in the Yale Centre for British Art.
