Notes:

Albert Marquet, a Fauvist painter, created a compelling series of sketches during his travels through North Africa in the early 20th century, particularly in Algeria and Tunisia. Works such as this piece, often rendered in pencil or ink, reveal his deep sensitivity to light, movement, and daily life. Marquet’s North African sketches frequently depict scenes of women in traditional dress and donkeys, both central elements of local culture.
