Burne-Jones (Philip)

Burne-Jones (Philip)

Two autograph letters signed ('Phil') to his uncle Sir Edward Poynter, both featuring original sketches by Burne-Jones. In the first letter he confirms that "it will give me great pleasure to dine with you next Sunday as you so kindly suggest" and adds "If you will let me, I will come not dressed, which I shall find a more convenient arrangement. I am very glad to hear that you are back again and shall be happy to hear your news", two pages, integral blank with 10cm long closed tear, 8vo, 41 Egerton Terrace, 13 October 1915. The second letter reads "Please do not think that my prolonged silence in any way means that you are not extremely often in my thoughts. Though we have not exchanged ideas lately, I hear...of your plans, and am glad to think that you are not contemplating an immediate return to London, with its dirt and darkness and other drawbacks. I hope so much that your stay in the country may have been blessed to you, and that you have had no return of the uncomfortable conditions which decided you get change of air and scene. I have come down here to spend Christmas...with mother...I have my meals in lonely splendour, as the hot water pipes have gone wrong and turned into ice water pipes instead, so that mother has to keep to her room...The presence of a large yellow cat, however, greatly mitigates the conditions", four pages, 8vo, Rottingdean, 23 December 1917 (2)
