Bishops’ Bible.- Scottish interest
The Holy Bible conteyning the Olde Testament and the Newe,
Bishops’ version, black letter, frontispiece and front endpapers detached, laid onto linen, in-text illustrations including map of the Holy Land, lacking first title and all other leaves before A1 (p.1), except one prologue leaf bound at rear, new testament title with repaired tear at foot, A1 and a few other leaves strengthened in margin, 4S4 with loss to text, 5B1 onwards with significant loss and repairs affecting text, 4F2 with loss partially affecting woodcut, some staining and spotting throughout, occasional ink staining affecting text, some short tears and loss in margins, 6 blank leaves bound before New Testament with 4pp. ‘My Own Family’ manuscript genealogical tables of the Wright and (later) Norie families, by William Wright (b.1726) and later generations, covering the 17th to early-19th century, some tears and repairs to these leaves, [Herbert 227], 18th century Scottish binding, gilt tooled, worn with cracking and some loss to spine, a.e.g., folio, Deputies of Christopher Barker, 1595.
***The Norie (or Norrie family) in Edinburgh ran the most successful Scottish painting business of the 18th century, completing many notable interior decorative schemes. Their decorative work is discussed by Edward Croft-Murray, Decorative Painting in England 1537-1837, vol. 2, 1970, pp. 249-50, and James Holloway, The Norie Family, National Galleries of Scotland, 1994.
