Notes:

This present lot is illustrated in A. Varela Santos, 'Yuan to Qing Ceramics', 2016/2017, cat. 37

C.f. See an identical dish sold at Christie's London, 18th June 2002, lot 344 [link]; and another from the Hodroff Collection, sold at Christie's New York, 23 Jan 2008, lot 366 [link]

The arms depicted in the present lot are those of de la Bistrate of Anvers in Brabant and Proli of Milan and Brabant. A second version is recorded with white enamel in place of the silver decoration. There is another service bearing the same design, but instead with the arms of Torriano and Proli. It is quite possible that Nathaniel Torriano, senior supercargo and Chief of Council in Canton in 1721 and again in 1727-8, may have ordered for both sides of the Proli family.

See H. Maertens de Noordhout, Porcelaines chinoises 'Compagnie des Indes' décorée d'armoire belges, Brussels, 1997, pp.66-71, where plates from both the de la Bistrate and Proli services are illustrated and also a plate from the service with the Boone arms, the latter of which likely stems from confusion of orders at the workshop. An identical plate to the present lot is in the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, exhibited in 'Chinese Export Porcelain', Hong Kong, 1989-90, pp. 244 and 245, catalogue no.96, and also by de Noordhout ibid. p.69; another from the Mottahedeh Collection, is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, no.459, p.453. Also see 'Ancient Chinese Trade Porcelain' from the British Museum, London, by R. Krahl and J. Harrison, Taipei 1994, pp. 288/289, cat. 129 for a similar plate, but with the arms of Charles Boone, in the medallion at the centre of lower rim. Also see 'Chinese export-porcelain, Chine de Commande' from the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, catalogue by C.J.A. Jörg, Hong Kong 1989, p. 244/245 and cat. 96 for a similar plate. Also see 'Chinese Export Porcelain', by D.S. Howard, pp. 40/41.

極有可能由 Nathaniel Torriano(曾於一七二一年及一七二七至二八年出任廣州首席監造官兼商館首席議員)為 Proli 家族兩支同時訂製。

Ayers,《China for the West》,倫敦與紐約,一九七八年,編號 459,第453頁 。
