York circa 1680 by Richard Waynes (free 1666)
A Charles II provincial silver tumbler cup

Of plain rounded form with a caulked rim, engraved underneath with initials M * H in Roman script. Maker’s mark only partially struck of R W with a mullet below within a heart shaped punch.
Diameter – 7.1 cm / 2.8 inches
Weight – 58 grams / 1.86 ozt

Notes:

Richard Waynes is recorded in Jackson’s (p. 462) as free in 1666, seen on a communion cup of 1670, and a trefid spoon of 1690. His mark is found upon a tumbler of 1680 (private collection), and a trefid spoon of 1689 sold Bonham’s New Bond Street, 19 Nov 2008, lot 50 (£1560 incl. prem).
