Philipp Peter Roos was born in Frankfurt into a family of artists; his father, Johann Heinrich Roos and his brother Johann Melchior Roos were also artists renowned for their work. His early works were heavily influenced by his father, and his progression led to a appointment from Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, who sponsored him to travel Rome in 1677, where he went to practise in the studio of Giacinto Brandi (1621-1691).
