Wilhelm Hammerschmidt (?-1869)
Two Views of Egypt, c.1860s

Albumen print, image size 22 x27cm, pasted down onto card, overall measuring 30 x36.5cm, signed and numbered in the negative, featuring a portrait of a young boy and his donkey, with the saddle and curb bit.
Together with another print, image size 22 x27cm, pasted down onto original album page, overall measuring 30 x36.5cm, signed in the negative, and with typed caption on card margin, depicting a group of camels used for the transport of goods.

Born in Berlin, Wilhelm Hammerschmidt settled in Egypt around 1860, and established his photographic studio and shop in Cairo. He exhibited ten of his views of Egypt at the Société Française de Photographie in 1861, and later, in 1867, he exhibited his Egyptian costume studies at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He also photographed the Holy Land and Syria.
