5 volumes in 6. first editions [except for vol. 1 being second edition], inscribed in each volume except part II of vol. 3, original navy blue cloth, lettered in gilt, original dust-jackets, slight wear at extremities to first 5, dust-jacket to ‘The Eastern Front’ worn with some loss to spine towards lower spine and rear panel, otherwise a very good set, [Woods A31(a)] 8vo., 1923 – 1931

*** Inscriptions:- Vol. 1 ‘From Winston May 5 1923’; Vol. II ‘To Ettie from Winston Oct 27 1923’; Vol III pt. 1 ‘Ettie from Winston 3.3.27’, pt. 2 no inscription; ‘The Eastern Front’ inscribed ‘Ethel Desborough from Winston Churchill’ to front endpaper possibly in the hand of Lady Desborough.
Lady Ethel (Ettie) Desborough was a socialite and periodically Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Mary, consort of George V.

An unusual find with the inscriptions to the same recipient at the time of publication. Ethel (Ettie) Fane, the granddaughter of John Fane, the 11th Earl of Westmorland. She was beautiful, rich, and charming and was friends with politicians such as Balfour, Curzon, and Churchill, as well as writers: Kipling, Wells, Sassoon, Yeats, and Oscar Wilde, who wrote a short story about her titled “The Birthday of the Infanta”.
