A set of three George III sterling silver condiment and sugar vases, London 1776 by Pierre or Peter Gillois (reg. 20th Nov 1754)
Comprising a larger and a pair of shorter. Each of circular vase form upon a pedestal base with a square foot, each with upturned scroll acanthus twin handles leading to a waisted pull off lid with domed centred surmounted by a pyriform finial. Each lid cut with a ladle aperture located to an aperture on the body via three location notches. The feet with embossed laurel wreath decoration, the bodies with a lower section of acanthus leaves, the upper section with an embossed border of rosettes and flutes. Each engraved with a contemporaneous coat of arms in a shield shape cartouche within a ribbon tied oval. Each fully marked underneath, the lids with lion passant only to the bezel. (3)

Gillois was a specialist tea caddy and sugar box maker, a Huguenot his mark is distinctly French in appearance. His workshop was registered in Wardour Street, St Anne’s Soho at this time.
