JACQUES STELLA (LYON 1596 - PARIS 1657)
Penitent Magdalene
circa 1620
oil on marble
18 x 27 cm (7 x 10 1/2 in.)
The present work can be related to various Marie Madeleine en prière on slate and marble dating from Stella's sojourn to Italy between 1622-34. His small scale paintings on semi-precious stones, a technique he learnt in Florence, were highly sought after by the collectors of the day. The present painting draws comparison with Judith and Holofernes, 30 x 36 cm, oil on slate, in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (Fig. 1). Stella developed a close relationship with the Borghese family while in Rome.
