A George III sterling silver sauce tureen, London 1802 by John Emes (this mark reg. 10th Jan 1798)
Of rectangular form with curved corners and gadrooned rim raised upon four lion paw feet with splayed leaf junctions. Each side with hinged oval ring handles with classical ram’s masks junctions. The removable lid with cavetto edge and gently domed centre surmounted by a detachable acorn and leaf sprig finial, also cut with a ladle aperture. The body engraved with a quartered coat of arms with another quartered arms on an escutcheon of pretence. The lid engraved with a fish vert above a crescent. Fully marked to the base, and part-marked to the lid flange, the ring handles with lion passant and maker’s mark only, the finials unmarked. The lid and base with three alignment dots.
