TWO MONUMENTAL STORY-TELLING CEREMONIAL WALL HANGINGS
Possibly Udaipur (Mewar), Rajasthan, North-Western India, mid to late 20th century

Opaque and acrylic pigments on a white cotton canvas, the almost identical, horizontally arranged compositions painted in polychromes with a narrative in irregular bands eulogising an enthroned Rajput king, depicting him getting married (left); surrounded by his faithful soldiers and courtiers(right); and receiving foreign ambassadors and processions of semi-divine and divine beings including Shiva with his trident and Durga on her tiger (left); both hangings mounted, glazed and framed, each 86cm x 213cm including the frame.

A similar though earlier Udaipur ceremonial wall hanging was successfully sold in these Rooms, 29 October 2020, lot 328.
