A DOUBLE ILLUSTRATED FOLIO: THE HUSTLE INSIDE THE FORT / LADIES AT THE WELL
Possibly Mewar or Jodhpur, Rajasthan, North-Western India, 18th century

Opaque pigments, and black and red ink on wove paper, the folio illustrated on both sides with two vertical compositions, the recto with a crowded scene depicting the life and hustle inside the fort, the composition developing on multiple levels capturing both interior and exterior scenes, including a Shaiva temple with a yoni in the mandapa, mahouts riding elephants, noble courtiers riding horses, a gathering of women in their quarters, and the encounters of two princes with their favourite courtesans under white marble pavilions, at the top of the fortified wall several pairs of cannons, the verso with a gathering of ladies at the well filling up their brass lotas with fresh water, to the right an armed knight observing them, below the composition 5ll. of black and red ink Devanagari script, the compositions set within double red rules, mounted, the folio 29cm x 20cm.
