TWO COURTLY LADIES DRINKING IN THE PALACE
Possibly Bundi or Kotah, Rajasthan, North-Western India, 19th century

Opaque pigments heightened with gold and silver on paper, the vertical portrait depicting two well-dressed and heavily bejewelled courtly ladies confabulating together, one holding a small red and white drinking bottle and the latter a matching cup whilst hugging her confidante, the scene set in a palatial interior in front of a baluster and underneath a white marble arch, within blue and white rules and bright orange borders, the verso with a black ink Devanagari inscription and later inventory numbers 15 and 18/2, 32.3cm x 24cm.
