Notes:

The result of C-Link Research & Development Limited thermoluminescence test no.5317GK78 (25 Oct 2018) is consistent with the dating of this lot.

The present lot is a particularly rare example of Kangxi-era langyao vase, with most pieces from this period being of baluster form, rather than the large-scale rouleau form seen here. This period saw a revival of the copper-red glaze, with the master craftsmen at the kilns in Jingdezhen attempting to recreate the lost formula that gave rise to the monochrome ceramics of the Xuande period. The term langyao makes reference to Lang Tingji (1663-1715), who supervised the production at this time.

There are other examples of Kangxi rouleau vases of this size, all with differing decoration. For some famille-verte examples, see a large rouleau vase offered at Sotheby's New York, The Jie Rui Tang Collection, 20 March 2018, lot 322; Christie’s New York, 15th September 2016, lot 870; and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Bequest of Benjamin Altman, 1913, 14.40.83. For a powder-blue example see Bonhams London, 11th May 2017, lot lot 213. For a blue and white example, see Bonhams London, 8th November 2012, lot 42.
