English counties, four extensive albums

Four extensive albums of drawings and watercolours compiled by Richard Suter, architect, comprising: Surrey & Sussex (89 pp. of pasted-in drawings); Hants. & Isle of Wight (40 pp.); Wilts., Somerset, Devon, Cornwall (106 pp.); Maidenhead & Neighbourhood (138pp.); compiled in the 1880s from a lifetime of travel sketch books beginning in the early 1820s, the majority depicting topographical or architectural subjects, estates, railway scenes, also occasional figures and domestic scenes; including folding sheets, occasional prints and albumen photos, some pages with works removed, gilt-lettered half morocco, rubbed, folio (48 x 30cm) (4)

Subjects include: The Victory in Portsmouth Harbour, works of the Westbury Iron Co., ‘ruins of the skeleton for winter garden Brighton’, the cutting of railways, GWR bridge, Lord Palmerston's house, croquet, Eton College, ‘Nepaul 1678’, Cheddar Gorge, large folding view of the Vale of Cheddar, Salisbury Cathedral, Bath Abbey, Richmond.

***Richard Suter, of Castle Hill, Maidenhead (1798 - 1883), was an architect and lawyer. His wife, Anne Burn, was the daughter of Major General Andrew Burn of the Royal Marines (1742 - 1814) and his son, also Richard, was an architect in Australia.
