A Japanese bronze vase by Aida Tomiyasu (1901-1987), Showa era

The finely cast bronze vase in the form of a traditional Chinese 'arrow-vase' from with two vertical mimi (lugs) on both sides, the center of the front adorned with a 'Celtic knot' motif and the reverse with a raised ring, the base bearing a signature reading Tomiyasu, together with a wood tomobako storage box and cover

Aida Tomiyasu was a Japanese metal craftsman renowned for his refined bronze casting. Born in Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, he studied under the noted metal-casting master Yamamoto Azumi. Throughout his career, he was closely involved with leading artisan and exhibition organisations; in 1942 he joined the art research society Kosaikai, later serving as its chairman. After World War II, he became a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Nitten exhibitions, where he won the tokusen (grand prize) in 1948, and eventually rose to the positions of board director and counselor.
