SEVEN LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ SPOONS
Iran, 17th - 18th century
Comprising seven gilt, polychrome-painted and lacquered papier-mâché stacking spoons, the shape and style reminiscent of Abadan ceremonial spoons, with flexed and curved handles and almond-shaped heads, stacked from the smallest to the largest, the decoration consisting of floral sprays, vegetal bands and cusped arabesque cartouches with gilt rosettes against a vibrant red ground with minor variations, the largest spoon repeating the same pattern but with raised lacquered decoration reminiscent of Kashmiri lacquer works, the handle with a stylised dragon terminal, the longest 21cm.
Originally part of a Parisian collection sold in 1960, later purchased in the French art market.
