Edward William Lane was a British lexicographer. After completing his studies in engraving and the Arabic language, he started working as an engraver. Shortly after, he fell ill and chose to travel to Egypt in search of a new career. In 1863, he published the Arabic-English Lexicon, which granted him recognition in the world of Linguistics. Before that time, he also translated key Arabic texts such as The Thousand and One Arabian Nights (1838 - 40). Lane lived in Egypt for a total of 12 years of his adult life and passed away in 1876.
