Stephen (d.1990) and Zoltán Glass (1903-1981)
BERLIN AND LONDON, 1930s-1940s. A binder of over 600 silver gelatin contact prints, accompanied by their negatives, print sizes between 4 x 6cm and 6 x 9cm (or the reverse). An interesting and varied archive of images by Hungarian brothers Stephen and Zoltán Glass, who emigrated to Berlin in the mid-to-late 1920s and later to London. In both cities, they worked as photographers and picture editors, and would share a studio in Chelsea when they moved to London. The present group is an eclectic mix of photographs from both Berlin and London, up to and including WWII; subjects range from Berlin street scenes, London street scenes, portraits of children at play, views of police officers in Trafalgar Square; an interesting series of subjects sleeping, boxing matches, a small group of dogs posing with automobiles, interior pub scenes, portraits of authors and artists, including George Bernard Shaw, portraits of doctors and dentists, studies of zoo animals including penguins and polar bears, Scottish street scenes, Highland golf courses, and many more.
