*Starting from one o'clock, the dial of this pocket watch is marked with letters likely to reveal the name of its original owner, Rusden Saranna. The search for homonyms bearing this name and living in the first half of the 19th century led repeated times to Sarah Ann Scott (née Rusden), also known as Saranna (08 Apr 1810 - 14 Jul 1896), an accomplished British linguist and scholar who moved to Australia with her family in the 1830s. She was the daughter of Rev. George Keylock Rusden (1786 - 1859); wife of Helenus Scott (1802 - 1879), an Australian settler, son of the renowned Scottish physician, Dr. Helenus Scott (1760 - 1821); and most importantly, she was the mother of the famous Australian women's rights activist Rose Scott (8 October 1847 – 20 April 1925), who founded the Women's Political Education League in 1902 and advocated for women and universal suffrage in New South Wales at the turn of the 20th century.
