Iran, dated Rajab 1304 AH (March - April 1887)

Persian manuscript on Iranian official government blue paper embossed with the Qajar symbol of the lion and sword (shir-o-shamshir), 56ff. plus two fly leaves, each blue folio with 11ll. of light shikasteh nasta’liq script in black ink, with minor passages written in Arabic, in tan calf binding, 20.5cm x 16.5cm.

Inscribed on the front page in ink: ‘The author of this work is the Majid ul-Mulk father of Mirza Ali Khan Amin ud Dowleh and Mirza Taki Khan Majid ul-Mulk, Tehran 1889, Sidney J. A. Churchill

The front end paper with an extract from a typed letter: ‘Lisbon, June 21, 1919, Dear George, I am sending you a MS by the late Amin ud-Dowleh’s father. It is a rare thing, or was in my time. The late Amin ud-Dowleh got it written for me, if I remember rightly. Yrs; SJAC

Sidney J. A. Churchill, British diplomat and linguist (1862 - 1921), was the son and brother of three British diplomats. In 1880, at the age of 18, he joined the Persian Telegraph Department of the Indian Civil Service, where he gained extensive knowledge of the Persian language (Farsi) and Iran. He then served as British Consul in Iran (1886 – 94) and was in attendance on the Qajar ruler of Persia Nasir al-Din Shah during his visit to England in 1889. Among many other places, he served in Lisbon (1918 – 21).
