A Victorian sterling silver mounted cut glass claret jug, London 1893 by Charles Evans

The wheel engraved clear glass body of compressed ovoid form, faceted and cut with trailing foliage, the silver mounted with embossed decoration of foliate scrolls, C scroll handle with rocaille recreation leading to a pierced foliate scroll band. The silver foot with embossed stylised foliage, traces of gilding, the spout below a hinged domed lid surmounted by a wrythen finial, similarly embossed. Engraved to one side “In recognition of 21 years faithful service as chief accountant 1898” to the other side “presented by Sir John Jackson together with a certificate for one thousand pound ins shares of Sir John Jackson Limited”. Gilt interior. Fully marked to the side of mount, part-marked to the foot and strap, lid unmarked.

Sir John Jackson CVO FRSE (1851 – 1919) was an eminent English engineer who in later life served as Unionist Member of Parliament for Devonport, from 1910 to 1918.
