A GOLD KOFTGARI QUR'AN STAND

Of typical cusped shape, with folding arms with two openwork interlocking parts, the upper sections in the shape of cusped arches, the lower sections designed as a cross with undulating edges, decorated in full in gold koftgari with cusped cartouches comprising epigraphic inscriptions from the Qur'an in naskh script amidst densely scrolling foliage, rosette roundels and vegetal motifs, 36.5cm x 18.5cm when folded.
Inscriptions on the outer panels: Sura al-Qalam (68), v. 51 and al-Alaq (96), v. 3.
Inscriptions on the inner panels: Sura al-Baqarah (2), v. 137, al-Imran (3), v. 139, An-Nisa (4), v. 45, and al-Kahf (18), v. 10.
A similar example was successfully sold at Bonhams London, 18 October 2016, lot 247. The Art Institute of Chicago also features a similar Qur'an stand in their permanent collection (2018.126), purchased thanks to the Chicago Collectors Circle, Friends of Indian and Islamic Art, and Asian Art Council Acquisition funds.
