Trissino (Gian Giorgio)
Dialogo...intitulato Il castellano, nel quale si tratta de la lingua italiana, first edition, 20 ff., large woodcut printer’s device on title, a little dusty and restored?, new endpapers, bound with antiphonary vellum leaf, inscribed in black and red ink, slightly spotted, [Adams T 950; Gamba 1705], 4to, [Tolomeo Ianiculo, Vicenza, 1529]
*** Editio princeps of this important work, in form of dialogue, concerning the debate over Italian language. In opposition to Machiavelli and Bembo, Trissino uses Dante’s ‘De vulgari eloquentia’ (he had translated in the same year), to support his own theory of a courtly Italian language. The work is printed in an elegant Italic type.
