Adam was a renowned British Filmmaker and BBC producer, writer, art specialist and collector of Modern Art. He wrote Eileen Gray: Her Life and Work: The Biography (2009); Outlines: David Hockney (1997) and Art of the Third Reich (1997).

This work is believed to depict a member of No 9 Company washing themselves. They lived at first in tents and later in Nissen huts and had few amenities.
