PROVENANCE
with the London dealer, Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd

The present lot relates very closely to a painting by Thomas Gainsborough now at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven (B1981.25.303), previously published by John Hayes in hisLandscapes of Thomas Gainsborough in 1982 (p. 259, pl. 303) as an unidentified 'Imitator of Thomas Gainsborough’ although now accepted by Yale as by Gainsborough. Both the present lot and the painting at Yale relate very closely to a drawing by Gainsborough, Wooded Landscape with Group of Figures, c. 1745, in the Morgan Library, New York (accession no. III, 52), especially the three figures on the right.

We would like to thank Hugh Belsey for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
