A LARGE TINNED COPPER DISH
Possibly Egypt or Syria, late 15th - 16th century
Of typical circular shape, resting on a short circular foot, with an everted flattened rim with lobed edges, the interior engraved with typical motifs usually encountered on Mamluk metalwork including geometric patterns; interlocking rectangular cartouches filled with thuluth calligraphy, knotwork, vegetal sprays and Y-shaped designs; and several fretwork bands, the central rosette medallion featuring a worn roundel with an item resembling a cup, possibly a reference to the Cup Bearer blazon (Al Saqi), 36cm diam.
